It's a book by a Norwegian author by the name of Gert Nygårdshaug who debuted as a writer in 1966 at the tender age of 20 with a book of poetry, Impulser (Impulses), and is best known for his detective novels starring the hobby gourmet detective Frederic Drum.
This book, Afrodites basseng, is not one of those. Dagbladet's reviewer, Øystein Rottem, called it a "grotesque and imaginative, but somewhat drawn-out (book) about a world on the edge of destruction." The review went on:
Every novel by Nygårdshaug is a wondrous affair, a treasure chest filled with oddities. His books are rich in esoteric knowledge, fantastic happenings and supernatural phenomenons. Several have to do with the near future permeated with ecological catastrophes and violent upheavals. There is a lot of uproar is these books, but at the same time they are marked by a deep concern for the earth's and people's well being. This year's novel (2003) is no different in this way. It follows up Prost Gotvins geometri (Prost Gotvin's Geometry), but in spite of all the overlying drama, it still seems more strained than this one. The treatment is more dragged out, and the interludes are not quite as gripping. You still, however, won't be bored.
