SAVOY: Reasons to stay indoors
You'll get accepted into yale But they'll excuse you when you fail You'll get a scholarship to brown But that color brings you down You'll go to colgate for a year In the fresh air up there You'll grow a habit hard to please From a semester overseas
You're really not quite well You know that And everyone can tell You know the reasons to stay indoors You don't need anymore you remind me of the man I once was And some say I still am
You'll land a job right out of school While your friends do something cool You'll get politically involved But your actions lack resolve You'll play the loner for awhile Dressed in black and creepy vibes You'll stay inside for weeks on end With imaginary friends
You're really not quite well You know that And everyone can tell You know the reasons to stay indoors You don't need anymore You remind me of the man I once was And some say I still am

Quote:Ok...you got me convinced
Thanks for your explanations and I'm off now to ponder some more lyrics.....
I suppose that's why we love a-ha....there's a bit more meat on the bones of the songs compared with say...The Cheeky Girls
Forgive me please for mentioning such an abomination on an a-ha site. I assure you it will never happen again!!!
However..there's never a forever thing ........... |
|
You mean, you might one day find a-ha being Cheeky Girls?

Back to business:
What do you think of ‘Keeper of the Flame’ in the light of ‘Reasons to Stay Indoors’?

About Paul disliking school:
"School never absorbed him (Paul). He liked doing everything else but school work. He says himself that already when being 10-11 music was fixed to be his life."
Taken from the idol-album ‘a-ha’, 1986 - (awfully) translated by Locust

Interesting.......
From my own perspective, I did well at school, but it never really engrossed me either. I was lucky that I could pass exams without much effort...but the downside to that is that I never really learned to 'toe the line', and by the time it came to go to uni I was bored of books and stuff....it all seemed so forced, to have to learn because someone tells you to, rather than because you want to.....
These lyrics could have been written for me.....
there's a hiden sense of regret there though...the use of the word 'fail' for example in Stay Indoors expresses strong sentiment, and leaves me to believe that the writer maybe does carry some baggage about schooldays around with them....
The lyrics "could have been.." in KOTF hint at unrealised potential, but hey, maybe like me Paul was too busy with 'adolescent daydreams'.....maybe a bit of a rebel there...''raise your fist up in the air, clench your fist and say, four more years and I'm outta here"
Who has had the last laugh though........!!!

In high school Paul was referred to as "The Guest" by one of his teachers.

From an interview of Paul by Stein Arne Nistad
Paul is no antiseptic celebrity, having grown up at Manglerud. He is not a post 68-er, but perhaps an early child of the seventies – teenager around 1975. During that period, there was a significant drug-problem at Manglerud, and large groups of young people got big problems. Many of them are no longer with us on this side of eternity. ”We stayed clear of that”, says Paul, referring to himself and Magne Furuholmen. ”Even if we were addicted to music, we avoided drugs!”. ”Hexagon” was the name of their band.
Paul Waaktaar couldn`t get into music-studies, and he was too shy to study language. ”That just wasn`t me in that period – stuttering some speech in other languages, with blushing cheeks”. So he ended up in science studies, with lots of math. And perhaps that wasn`t such a bad thing. According to Paul there is a lot of math and logic in music. Tones and chords are supposed to match, and even though he can`t write musical notes himself, his wife Lauren says that he almost never harmonize or arrange something in the wrong way.
But school wasn`t exactly the most important thing: ”At senior high school I was just referred to as ”the Guest” – but the final exam wasn`t bad at all. It was all about music and music. We were going to do the ”Beatles-thing” and I guess my parents weren`t too optimistic about my future. My sister was perhaps the first person that took my music seriously, and then my parents gradually accepted the state of things. After the breakthrough they have been to a lot of concerts all over the world. A very ordinary family, but I think they are quite proud!”

Just a quick note to say thanks you guys here in the cafe for this delve into the lyrical jungle. This is a great thread, even if it's had me drinking way too much coffee over recent times
Haven't had to consider such things since 1st year English Lit at Uni...where sadly I chucked it as I'd had enough...didn't have the patience for 4 more years myself....
My head's been spinning...feels like I've been chucked out the Rover at full speed

heheeee
Reminds me of of days at Uni. When I was studying in Russia we had these Politics lectures which lasted for and hour and a half. Discussing Politics in Russian with a Communist was not my cup of tea and I only went to two of the classes the whole year. Much preferring my bed to his classes! But,when Christmas came round we had a Christmas meal with all the lecturers and students and guess who I sat opposite at the meal.. Yeap the Politics lecturer. At the meal the Dean gave us all presents and he said "oh do the guests get them too" The look the Dean gave me !!

Magne on 'Keeper of the Flame'
"It's a song about childhood, his [Paul's] childhood … and you're really inspired by musical idols … and there's a drive in you that says you are destined to do something like this. I guess formulating this ambition is the most difficult thing…it doesn't feel like there's any other choice than to try. I guess this is Paul's way of looking back at that moment in time when the dawning realization that you may have something to offer comes with that hopelessness of being trapped in an ordinary life, and wondering how to break out of it."
(BBC Radio 2 - january 2006)

[Four more years and I am out of here!]
Kind of making sense now... The lyrics were written by Paul in 2005! Coincidence??
