John Lennon was walking around in Central Park, Bob Dylan sitting in cafés in Greenwish Village and the married couple Waaktaar-Savoy throwing coins in the Karma Boomerang jar in Grey Dog’s Café in West Village.
With home address on Manhattan there is no surprise the married couple Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and Lauren Waaktaar-Savoy, who as so many other artists, are inspired by the colourful heart in New York. Something they have included on Savoy’s double album with new and old to be releases in June.
- Grey Dog is where we are eating breakfast in Carmine Street and Karma Boomerang (title of the first single) is the tip jar. The thought is that you get back what you give and you really feel like leaving tip there, Lauren says whilst her a-ha man adds:
- Yes, you do not dare leaving there without tipping. Well, the jar is not as big in reality. I found it being a cool starting point for a song. All the new songs here are up-beat. It is another vibe to us as we oftentimes have a little moody songs. After this we will look for more tip jars to see whether there may be lying a new album there, he says and laughs behind the big pilot glasses.
Jet lag
The couple arrives right from New York where they live and their son are going to school.
- And, we have a real jetlag as proof. Paul took 2 sleeping pills, so he snored right beside me so I could not sleep at all, she says and sends Paul a sulky look.
That problem does not the third Savoy member have, the drummer Frode Unneland from Bergen. He had 2 hectical weeks in New York where the 10 cuts on one of the CDs where recorded, 7 new recordings of old material and 3 new songs. The other CD is a best-of compilation of 14 tracks.
- Time flies, but it is great to look back on the 5 albums we have made. It is a bit fun we are releasing “The Savoy Songbook Vol. 1”. If we want to, we can make another one. Paul agrees, but adds that Savoy may not have had enough time to present their material.
- This is a band with a kind of music you should have the opportunity to se live. We have not had all the time for that. This is something we hope to change.
Good atmosphere
The atmosphere must have been good in Loho sTudios at Lower East Side where they made the 10 new recordings. Behind the sticks were the Swedish superproducer Michael Ilbert (The Cardigans, The Strokes, Supergrass og The Hives) sitting, and with the 3 Savoy-members were the bassist Jørun Bøgeberg sitting.
- It is a mini version of the known RCA studio. Many of the other albums we have made have had a lot of trick recording where you are building up one instrument at the time. After having toured last year, we wanted to get at least 70 percent down in one recording. This is something I would like to do a lot more, Paul says.
Unneland adds that even though the studio was large, the 4 musicians were sitting closely together and looking at each other whilst recording the songs simultaneously. On the same floor have also artists like Keith Richards and Patti Smith been standing.
The reason for recording old material once again is that the songs have changed live, in addition to being supplied with a new jointed atmosphere.
- It is like Woody Allen shooting his films twice. I think that is the way most musicians would like to do it too. But it was hard to stop thinking we needed at least one new song. So there was one, then two, and then three. And all of a sudden we were on the way into a new album, the pop smith Paul Waaktaar-Savoy says.
New channels
Savoy modestly say they would love to tour if anyone want them. But then preferably Norway and perhaps Europe, they doubt on the USA.
- Then you would really need to clear your calendar. I don’t think we are there, but there are so many other ways to get ones songs out now. We have just put up a MySpace site www.myspace.com/bandsavoy and god knows how many people have popped in there. There are so many possibilities, Paul says.
It swings so well in the Savoy camp for the moment they are already talking about the new record they are going to make.
- This album shows we can make something being a bit unusual to us. We love to work together, Paul says. And Lauren joins in:
- I would love to work more the way we have done here, which is very much reflected in the songs. On ‘Rain’ are we singing together and everyone carrying the melodies.
